I’m working on some illustrated prose at the moment, and wanted to make sure I had a good handle on the look I wanted for the illustrations before I started, since it’s a slightly different beast than comics.
So I had the bright idea to do a sketch, and then ink it with three slightly different media approaches, to get a real comparison. I’m…not sure I recommend this. Inking the same thing three times is kinda boring (who knew!).
But it might be of interest to people other than me, so here we go!
Sketch (printed in cyan for each of the inks):
Just ink and white!
Ink and wash (should’ve blended to soften it a bit):
Ink and charcoal:
So there we go! The pure ink is closest to the feel I want for this, but while overall the ink and charcoal feels like a bit too much texture to me, I love the texture in the large black areas, so I’ll probably bring a bit of that in!
I’m tardy in posting my Christmas/New Year greeting, but I had two days over Christmas where I did no work at all, and that is good, so no apologies! 😉
Keep an eye out on the blog over the next little while – I’ll try and post some more 2015 work, since I’ve been quiet this last year, and some reading/watching recs I loved over the last year.
Good luck and fortitude for all for 2016 – may we all find the ways to tell the stories we want to tell, that make the world a little better, and that we can be proud of <3
And late Christmas wishes too – I hope everyone had a bit of a breather, and some time to relax, recuperate and reflect. I won’t make this a full new year’s post, as I’m still reflecting really, but I am looking forward to the year ahead, and very grateful for the blessings of the last year, including the wonderful chance to do a CUNE residency in Estonia, and getting the chance to work with the absolutely fantastic Phoenix crew.
Planning to make a few changes for this year, mostly to cons as I’m feeling a bit burnt out – but will be around, making work and enthusing about comics! More thoughts soon 🙂
Click through for more, including the first few Team concept illustrations – managed to get one done for each team’s idea!
Evening team presentations covered here – short and full of ideas and info, so this batch are a bit text-heavy! We’ll get into Day 2 tomorrow 🙂 Click through for more!
Just a quick blog-post to signal boost the Kickstarter for My So-Called Secret Identity, Suze Shore, Will Brooker and Sarah Zaidan’s really fantastic, non-standard take on superheroes, with a great female cast.
It’s funding it’s fifth and final issue (which I’ll be doing some of pages for if we reach the target!), and the collected book, and has some pretty cool rewards, including A3 ltd ed fine art prints of this pinup from me of characters Sekhmet and Ms Sparkle!
Hope you’ll check it out! 🙂
Happy Chinese New Year everyone!
